Abstract

This study was to investigate the effect of MgO addition to La2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 based glass on the properties of
the infiltrated glass. Several fractions of MgO (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 wt%) were added to the La2O3(38-40
wt%)-Al2O3(19 wt%)-SiO2(19 wt%)-B2O3(16 wt%)-Na2O(4 wt%)-CaO(2 wt%) glass. Glasses were prepared by melting
the appropriate mixtures of oxide powders followed by quenching in a water bath after holding at 1400¡É, and
then grinding into a powder using a planetary mill. The high temperature viscosity of the molten glasses was
measured using high temperature viscometer according to the ASTM C-965. The glass powder-water slurry was
placed on the partially sintered alumina (Accumt Mat Co., USA) preforms and infiltration was done at 1,150¡É for
20 min and then air cooled. The depth of glass infiltration in glass-alumina composites was measured using a
stereomicroscope (SMZ- U, Nikon, Japan). Measurements were performed 10 times per experimental groups and
averaged. The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA. The high temperature viscosity of glass was decreased
with increasing of MgO fraction. The infiltration depth in glass-alumina composite was increased with increasing
of the MgO f raction (1,090¡¾63 ¥ìm f or 0% MgO, 1 ,101¡¾24 ¥ìm f or 0.5% MgO, 1 ,128¡¾21 ¥ìm f or 1 .0% MgO,
1,168¡¾18 ¥ìm for 1.5% MgO, and 1,214¡¾22 ¥ìm for 2% MgO). The addition of MgO to lantanium alumino-silicate
glass may improve the infiltration behavior in the preformed alumina.
